IDAHO report 2011 - Uruguay

In Montevideo, a roundtable was organized by LGBT organisations and UN agencies on the theme “Social Inclusion, Human Rights and the Fight against Homophobia” to draw attention to the persistent homophobia in the country in spite of legal advances, and advocated for educational programs and teacher trainings.

Members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence held an evening vigil in front of the Parliament to remind of the specific stigma and discrimination faced by HIV+ people.

New premises for people living with HIV/AIDS in Uruguay
In Uruguay, the organisation of people living with HIV A.MI.SE.U will make the inauguration of its new premises coincide with the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. The premises will include a shelter for people living with HIV/AIDS who come from other cities in the countries to the capital Montevideo for treatment and who previously often had to spend the nights on the streets.
