Same Sex Marriage Rights soon a reality in Washington State
Following the Senate, the Washington House voted 55-43 today to approve marriage equality and send the bill to the governor, who has said she will sign it.
But opponents have vowed to fight gay marriage with a ballot measure, similar to California’s Proposition 8 that would give voters the opportunity to overturn pro-gay legislation.

Ban Ki Moon defends rights of sexual and gender minorities at Africa Union Summit
Speaking at the Summit of the African Union on January 29, 2012, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon specifically mentioned the violent political and social oppression, which sexual and gender minorities face throughout the continent.
Addressing leaders who often use homophobic and transphobic hate speeches as a smoke screen to hide their mismanagement of public affairs, M Ban Ki Moon noted :

The Ecuadorian government has pledged to shut down all ’gay cure’ clinics
Ecuadorian president, Rafael Correa, announced the appointment of Carina Vance Mafla, who is openly gay, as Ecuador’s new health minister.
The American-born activist hit the ground running, with an announcement that the health ministry will be working closely with lesbian rights group Fundacion Causana, and other civil rights groups, to shut down the remaining religious clinics which promise to ‘cure’ lesbians.

Mobilization across Brazil for a School without Homophobia
Brazil’s LGBT federation ABGLT has announced its intention to join the international IDAHO mobilization in 2012 against homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools.
The 257 member organizations of ABGLT have been invited to develop initiatives around May 17th.

During a round table discussion in New York on Dec 8th, 2011, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon affirmed that homophobic bullying of young people constitutes a “grave violation of human rights,” and urged States to take the necessary measures to protect their citizens from violence and discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.

An impressive list of 50 cities participated in the second edition of the international initiative inviting people to gather in public on May 17 and release balloons in the colors of the rainbow flag.

UN Resolution on Human Rights, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity - Text now available in all UN languages
Mid June, a historic resolution has been presented by South Africa at the Human Rights Council and adopted by a majority of its members. The resolution, the first ever to mention Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, affirms the universality of human rights, and notes concern about acts of violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
