The Ecuadorian government has pledged to shut down all ’gay cure’ clinics

Ecuadorian president, Rafael Correa, announced the appointment of Carina Vance Mafla, who is openly gay, as Ecuador’s new health minister. The American-born activist hit the ground running, with an announcement that the health ministry will be working closely with lesbian rights group Fundacion Causana, and other civil rights groups, to shut down the remaining religious clinics which promise to ‘cure’ lesbians. Mobilization across Brazil for a School without Homophobia

Brazil’s LGBT federation ABGLT has announced its intention to join the international IDAHO mobilization in 2012 against homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools. The 257 member organizations of ABGLT have been invited to develop initiatives around May 17th. Dutch Children Ombudsman launches awareness video

The Dutch National Child protection agency launched a series of videos, among which one is specifically devoted to homophobic bullying, the issue on which a large number of IDAHO 2012 actions will focus on. Watch the video More info on Ombudsman site

Fighting homo/transphobia IN and THROUGH education - an International Initiative for IDAHO 2012

Most schools around the word are not safe places for children and students who don’t conform to majority gender norms. Boys who are not ’masculine’ enough and girls who are not ’feminine’ enough experience stigmatization, discrimination and bullying. Likewise, teachers must hide their differences in order to keep their jobs and avoid harassment.

Even in progressive societies, the vulnerability of young people to harassment can lead to disastrous effects, including suicide.

By and large, what is being taught in class reinforces homo-transphobia, rather than help transform societies to be more inclusive of diversity.

For the upcoming International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, in May 2012, an international initiative aims to combat this situation.
