TAKE ACTION!
Fighting homo/transphobia IN and THROUGH education - an International Initiative for IDAHO 2012

Most schools around the word are not safe places for children and students who don’t conform to majority gender norms. Boys who are not ’masculine’ enough and girls who are not ’feminine’ enough experience stigmatization, discrimination and bullying. Likewise, teachers must hide their differences in order to keep their jobs and avoid harassment.

Even in progressive societies, the vulnerability of young people to harassment can lead to disastrous effects, including suicide.

By and large, what is being taught in class reinforces homo-transphobia, rather than help transform societies to be more inclusive of diversity.

For the upcoming International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, in May 2012, an international initiative aims to combat this situation.
